I attended a press conference held by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York Governor Kathy Hochul on August 4, 2026, at BedRock Preschool, 322 Arlington Avenue in Riverdale, the Bronx. The City Mayor discussed his vision for pre-kindergarten education New York City.
Although over 5,700 families applied for 2K early childhood daycare programs available in the Big Apple. However, only 2,000 children received initial offers for the fall. These early education programs, which begins in September across five school districts, is a key part of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s initiative to build a universal childcare system beginning at age 2. This special early educational project is supported by a two-year funding commitment from New York State.
“The overwhelming demand for 2-K shows what families across the city have known for years: New Yorkers need free, universal child care, and they need it now,” Mamdani said in a statement
Over 2,000 toddlers will receive a 2-K offer with about half getting their choice of school. Families who have other children in the same educational facility and live in the school district are prioritized for placemen. Parents have until the end of August to accept the offer. NYC will be planning to add additional capacity to meet the growing need.
Two thousand families are going to click on their inbox, and their lives will change forever,” Hochul said at the August 4th press conference. “All of a sudden, the burden lifted off your chest, and you look at that pile of bills and say, ‘Maybe I actually can make these payments this month.’
City officials said most of the 2-K seats will run the full day, and the full year. The city’s other preschool programs for 3- and 4-year-olds can be either full or part-time.
