On Monday, June 5, journalists employed by Gannett will strike. Gannett is the nation’s largest newspaper chain, owning about 200 papers, and of these, 24 papers across seven states will be affected. The writers are represented by NewsGuild-CWA. Those in the union are choosing the day of Gannett’s annual shareholder’s meeting for their action. NewsGuild cited deep cuts in the number of newsroom staff, gross underpayment, and the huge salary of Mike Reed, board chair and CEO of Gannett as reasons for the strike.
