New York, NY —I joined workers demonstrating in front of the Fairfield Marriot Hotel, 330 West 40th Street in Manhattan the evening of Thursday July 23rd. The Marriot is refusing to recognize that their staff are now represented by the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council union although the hotel workers joined the union October 2022. The Marriot will not negotiate a contract with HTC.
The workers voted to become members of the Hotel & Gaming Trades Council, AFL-CIO (HTC) in October of 2022. Throughout years of negotiations for their first union contract, the union has filed multiple charges accusing the hotel of committing a range of anti-union practices and activities. This includes: failing to bargain in good faith, discriminating against workers because of their support for the union, encouraging workers to not join a union, replacing union staff with subcontracted workers.
The workers and their union have put up a picket line and are encouraging customers to boycott the hotels and cancel their stays until management follows the law and treats these workers fairly. Demonstrations are continuing on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at 326 W 40th Street, New York, NY.
It’s certainly time for the hotel management at these hotels to respect the workers rights and the law and negotiate a fair contract.
