Construction laborers who are unionized are asking for set wage requirements for city-funded housing projects. The Adams administration has, not surprisingly given his administration’s attempted money-grab at city retirees’ promised medical coverage, declared that such a request is way too expensive. But there is a City Council measure, the Construction Justice Act, that is backed by the Mason Tenders’ District Council, that would require wages and benefits worth at least $40 per hour on certain housing projects financed with city subsidies. The same old line that such a requirement would “discourage would-be developers from participating” in subsidized projects, was used by Ahmed Tagani of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
