The majority of childcare providers in California are women of color. Many of them are struggling to put food on their own tables, while they take care of the needs of other families. In 2020, they voted to unionize and now the over 40,000 workers are represented by Child Care Providers United (CCPU), which is a partnership of SEIU Local 99, SEIU Local 521, and UDW/AFSCME Local 3930. AFSCME President Lee Saunders hailed the agreement, which includes historic pay increases and “the first of its kind retirement fund for child care providers in this country.”
