It would seem to be a common sense decision to employ a trained human operator of AI vehicles at all times, especially those that are exceptionally large and heavy, such as trucks. There have already been numerous gruesome accidents and near-misses, two involving children, in California, and these were with robotaxis, certainly less of a danger than what the Teamsters are currently opposing. Teamsters, California lawmakers and labor allies are supporting Assembly Bill 2286, which would require an operator behind the wheel of self-driving trucks weighing over 10,000 lbs. And yet this very reasonable plan is being opposed by autonomous vehicle companies, putting profits over people. A 2023 poll showed three-quarters of California votes across parties and all demographics support what the allies of the bill want.
