Waking up this morning, I reflected on the horrific attacks that occurred 25 years ago. It is hard to believe that it is a quarter century since that day, which changed the lives of so many. I know today is a difficult day for so many who lost a loved one. It is a day that brings back so many hurtful memories, as the entire world was in fear of what was happening and what was to come. I know that many have heart breaking stories of that day and its aftermath, and over the years we’ve heard of how many escaped the tragedy by some quirk of fate, such as by not being at work in those towers because they stopped for coffee, or were late because of traffic. Today, every one of us reflects on where we were, and still struggles to accept the loss of so many.
It is important today to reflect and remember the lives of our first responders who ran into those buildings to save many, and lost their lives in the service of others. Those brave men and women went to work that day to do their job, not knowing what was about to happen, and when the attacks occurred, they responded as always, disregarding thoughts of the consequences to themselves or their loved ones.
This is what our brave first responders do and we must NEVER FORGET their actions that day, which saved many lives. No doubt those first responders who did survive have memories of that horrible day and continue to live with that.
My heart and prayers go out to all who lost their lives, not only on that horrific day, but those who have succumbed as a result of their actions in the rescue and recovery, and I salute our first responders for their dedicated service to protecting the public while risking their own lives.
