On Tuesday July 27th I attended a press conference at 1029 Shepard Ave in Brooklyn regarding the city’plan to open 5 grocery stores with 30% discounted food costs.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a plan for five city-run grocery stores offering a 30% discount on essential items like fresh produce, meat, and dairy, promising good union jobs and wages for workers, while facing pushback from local bodega and small business owners.
Many Businesses including neighborhood groceries, the United Bodegas of America and local bodega owners, have criticized the publicly funded initiative, arguing that government-backed stores using taxpayer money will unfairly undercut mom-and-pop shops.
Private contractors will manage daily storefront operations, and Mayor Mamdani stated that store workers will receive family-sustaining wages and benefits through labor contracts.
