The Economic Policy Institute, which is a leader in the movement for economic justice and works for an economy “where every job is good, [and] every worker can join a union”, is predicting that Trump’s agenda of mass deportation of immigrants, which is already happening by the thousands each day, will result in a cataclysmic crash of available workers. California, Florida, New York and Texas will have the highest number of job losses due to the large immigrant population in these states. Florida has already passed an incredibly egregious law that makes it legal to employ teenagers to do the work that had previously been done by these workers. Over the next four years, according to the EPI analysis, nearly 6 million jobs will be lost, and not just for immigrants, but also U.S.-born workers will lose their jobs as well, due to the fact that these two groups’ jobs are often complementary and economically linked. “Trump’s radical mass deportation agenda will destroy millions of jobs for immigrant and U.S.-born workers, particularly in construction and child care. While Trump and other conservatives claim that increased deportations will somehow magically create jobs for U.S.-born workers, the existing evidence shows that the opposite is true: they will cause immense harm to workers and families, shrink the economy, and weaken the labor market for everyone,” said Ben Zipperer, EPI senior economist.
