Waste Collection Teamsters in Boston Forced into Strike Against Republic Services

450 Teamsters Local 25 in the Boston area, who are employed by waste giant Republic Services, went on strike on July 1st, as a response to a refusal of the multi-billion-dollar company to give workers a fair deal. Republic Teamsters want a contract that would include improved wages, better benefits, and stronger labor protections. Now, waste collection for hundreds of thousands of residents in the area will be disrupted, just as a nationwide holiday is around the corner. “If your rubbish is piling up on the Fourth of July, remember who’s responsible for it: the white-collar criminals who run Republic Services,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. Strikes may be launched in other parts of the country, potentially bringing picket lines resulting in a work stoppage for over 3,500 as the Teamsters push for similar contracts from Republic.
