Detroit, MI – United Auto Workers President Dennis Williams said Nov. 10 that he wants to meet with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss how to overturn or fix the North American Free Trade Agreement.
“We’re going to do what we have to do as an organization,” Williams told reporters. “I’m prepared to sit down and talk to him about trade. NAFTA is a problem. I think his position on trade is right on.” He said that free-trade agreements like NAFTA have “in many cases destroyed lives and destroyed the middle class,” by eliminating tariffs and other barriers to imports from low-wage countries. The UAW endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton in the campaign. While an internal poll before the election showed that more than twice as many members preferred Clinton, Williams added, the survey may have been one of the many that underestimated Trump’s support.
