Sacramento, CA – Teamsters Joint Council 7 has withdrawn its support for Republican congressional candidate Scott Jones, saying it was “extremely disappointed” with his decision to back Donald Trump for President.
The union had endorsed Jones, who is challenging incumbent Ami Bera for a seat representing the Sacramento suburbs, in March, because he opposed the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, while Bera had voted to give President Barack Obama fast-track authority for it. Joint Council 7 President Rome Aloise has said the TPP would jeopardize 10,000 union jobs in California’s dairy industry, but that was not enough to balance Trump’s stances on union and immigration issues. “Many Republicans are withholding their support for Trump because of his divisiveness and his scapegoating of immigrants, women, and workers,” he wrote in a letter to Jones earlier this month. “We cannot stand with anybody who condones such behavior.” Read more
