Atlantic City, NJ – With a strike deadline set for Friday, July 1 at five of the city’s eight casinos here, UNITE HERE Local 54 will be holding contract negotiations with management throughout the week.
The union, which represents about 9,600 bartenders, servers, porters, and other hospitality workers in the Atlantic City area, voted June 16 to authorize a strike at the Tropicana Atlantic City and Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort, owned by billionaire Carl Icahn, and three Caesars Entertainment casinos, Caesars Atlantic City, Bally’s Atlantic City, and Harrah’s Resort. Local 54, saying members’ wages have increased by only 80 cents an hour since its 34-day strike in 2004, wants a $3-an-hour raise over the next five years, restoration of vacation time conceded in 2011, and for the casinos to contribute enough money to prevent cuts in health benefits. It says talks at the city’s other three casinos—Borgata, Golden Nugget, and Resorts—are making progress. Read more
