“In Transit” Derails As a Musical”
“In Transit” is a musical without live music and no musicians while the songs are in A Capella”. The show is about New Yorkers whose lives are intertwined on the subway.
Tony award winner Kathleen Marshall directed and choreographed the show. Her direction gives the performances energy and momentum. The songs were written by Kristen Anderson Lopez and her husband Robert Lopez who won an Oscar for Frozen. Other writers are James-Allen Ford, Russ Kaplan and Sara Wordsworth. An off-Broadway edition of this musical was launched in 2010.
Overall, the plot is weak although the “A Capella” melodies are harmonious. Obviously the use of the subway is a metaphor for the ups and downs of life. The actors do a decent job given the sanguine material and plot.
This meaningless drab musical needs better harmony although it is well-intended. Good intentions are insufficient to pay the price required for attending a Broadway show. It is quite clear I do not recommend this show which has been stalled at the station.
