New York, NY – One of the very best safety and health resources available to workers and unions is the New York Committee for Occupational Safety & Health.  NYCOSH’s singular goal is to make workplaces safer for all. The organization provides education and trainings, conducts industrial hygiene assessments, and does policy and advocacy work to create safe and healthy jobs for some of New York’s most vulnerable workers.

Labor attorney Robert Grey.

NYCOSH focuses on occupational safety and health at a time when workers need it most: during a global pandemic that has claimed the lives of more than 700,000 people. They have been with workers at the frontlines calling for more protections for essential workers, outside of OSHA offices demanding an expansive Emergency Temporary Standard for all, and in press conferences calling for more outreach on the workers’ compensation system to workers who missed time on the job due to COVID-19.

NYCOSH is not industry specific, but has focus areas.  For example, the organization releases an annual report on construction fatalities—one of the most dangerous industries—and has also put out reports on waste workers, Amazon workers, and workers in many other dangerous industries. NYCOSH has a program to recover stolen wages from workers, and also runs a nail salon school for workers looking to mobilize towards healthier salons while obtaining their license. Workers’ compensation is another focus area due to the impact that the system has on injured workers.

The organization is a resource for unions and workers and is always there before, during, and after disasters like 9/11, Superstorm Sandy, and now COVID-19. If you or your organization need support, reach out to their team and get access to their free trainings, assessments, and more.
