Washington, DC – In the last few months, the National Labor Relations Board has seen a wave of complaints from truck drivers about workplace retaliation for trying to unionize—including several from drivers at XPO Logistics and its subsidiaries, who the Teamsters have been trying to organize.
In one, Humberto Canales and other XPO Cartage drivers alleged the company retaliated against them after they signed a union petition. Canales says it reduced the amount of work he got so low he couldn’t make payments on his truck, which he’d bought through its lease-purchase program. “I ended up leaving XPO because of retaliation,” he told Trucks.com. In another, several XPO Logistics drivers complained that the company threatened to fire them for union activity and suspended one, Fidel Gonzalez. “This is a pervasive problem in the trucking industry,” Julie Gutman Dickinson, a labor attorney at the Bush Gottlieb firm in Southern California, told Trucks.com. “The carriers instill fear that if [drivers] support the union, they will be terminated.” In February, XPO Logistics CEO Bradly Jacobs told The Loadstar, a logistics industry news site, that he isn’t against unions, but “the Teamsters are completely out of control.” He added: “99% of our employees [in the US] are union-free and they will remain that way.” Read more
