Metal Lathers Local 46 Benefit Funds

The Metallic Lathers and Reinforcing Ironworkers Local 46, AFL-CIO, has been providing New York City and vicinity with highly skilled tradesmen for over 100 years. The Metal Lathers 46 jurisdiction includes all segments of reinforced steel, post tension, wire lath, black iron, and suspended ceilings. Members work in heavy and highway, airports, commercial and residential buildings.

The Metal Lathers Local 46 Benefit Funds are multiemployer benefit trust funds established more than 70 years ago. The Pension Fund has assets in excess of $400 million with 2,500 participants. The Welfare Fund covers more than 1,300 union members and retirees for medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance. The Annuity Fund (established 55 years ago) has just under 2,200 participants and over $300 million of assets. The Scholarship Fund pays out over $500,000 each year in benefits and has about $2 million in assets, and the Vacation Fund covers just over 1,600 members. The benefits fund office is located in Woodside, New York.

The Funds’ Trustees seek an Funds Manager to manage the day–to-day operation and administration of these Funds. The successful candidate will possess a strong benefits background administering multiemployer benefits plans, specifically defined benefit retirement plans, annuity programs and health and welfare benefit plans. The candidate will:

  • possess extensive knowledge of plans of similar design,

  • have a focus on customer service and track record of achieving high levels of member satisfaction,

  • be cognizant of legal requirements, trends in the industry, and best practices,

  • have the ability to supervise a diverse and multifunctional staff of 5, and

  • provide clear and timely reports to the Trustees.

Position Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree and eight (8) or more years’ experience in benefit fund administration or related experience

  • Excellent project management skills, including the coordination of complex projects

  • Ability to support members, trustees and fund staff

  • Strong knowledge of MS Office (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

  • Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (“CEBS”) or other relevant credentials a bonus


  • Must be well organized and flexible

  • Must be detail-oriented and able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Ability to interact with staff at all levels in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient, with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.

  • Strong decision-making ability and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work both individually and in a team-based environment.

  • Knowledge of Peachtree accounting systems a plus

Essential Functions:

  1. Deliver timely and accurate Funds enrollment and life event processing and maintain eligibility records for participants in all Funds.

  2. Support workforce to ensure excellent, on time delivery of services through efficient allocation and management of responsibilities and resources.

  3. Help oversee Providers and ensure that performance meets Funds standards, and problems are anticipated and avoided (if possible) or quickly resolved.

  4. Ensure that required communications /records are timely, accurate and efficiently done.

  5. Ensure compliance with HIPAA and all applicable government regulations, and manage vendors to ensure Funds PHI and PII are appropriately safeguarded.

  6. Maintain best in class financial controls. Review and approve, as appropriate, all statements, billings and invoices submitted to the Funds for payment. Establish internal audit procedures and manage external auditors to ensure proper payments and flow of funds.

  7. Maintain comprehensive knowledge of benefits, eligibility rules, contribution rates, and participating employers. Ensure appropriate documentation and dissemination of knowledge to staff.

  8. Implement benefit changes with corresponding preparation and dissemination of notices to plan participants and contributing employers, when required.

  9. Ensure timely and accurate filing of all required submissions to government agencies

  10. Enable the Fund office to be a trusted resource for members.
