The rights of nail salon employees must be respected, and we have launched an aggressive crackdown on the industry to make sure that happens. We formed a multi-agency Enforcement Task Force that will move immediately to stop wage theft, prevent unsafe working conditions, and shut down unlicensed businesses in the nail salon industry.

We also introduced legislation and a comprehensive plan to protect workers and educate employers, including a “Bill of Rights,” a public outreach campaign in multiple languages and a thorough investigation of the chemicals that are used in nail salons. These changes will make New York’s workplace safety rules one of the toughest in the nation.

New York State has a long history of confronting wage theft and unfair labor practices head on. We will not stand idly by as workers are deprived of their hard-earned wages and robbed of their most basic rights.

Together, we will send the message loud and clear: we will not tolerate abusive or unsafe working conditions – period.
