Los Angeles, CA – A strike by about 17,000 AT&T technicians in California and Nevada ended after one day Mar. 23, after the company reached a settlement with the Communications Workers of America.
CWA District 9 officials said the strike was provoked by AT&T’s demand that the premise technicians who specialize in installing and maintaining the company’s U-verse television system also work on equipment for landline phone service. “The company will no longer require technicians to perform work assignments outside of their expertise and classification,” the union said in a statement. The technicians have been working without a contract since April 2016. Other issues at stake in the negotiations include management proposals to reduce sick leave and disability benefits and have workers pay more for health care. The CWA also argues that AT&T has moved 8,000 call-center jobs abroad, to the Philippines, Mexico, and elsewhere. “We want to keep our call center jobs here in California,” technician Armando Zepeda, a union board member who works in San Diego, told the Los Angeles Times. AT&T’s 21,000 wireless-phone workers, among the few union shops on the wireless side of the industry, are also in talks on their contract, which expired in February. Read more
