Western, NY – After voting to join 1199 SEIU (Service Employees International Union) United Healthcare Workers East back in July, 61 Support Staff Workers – including Housekeepers, Laundry Aides, Dietary Staff, Maintenance Techs, Activity Aides and Unit Clerks at the Humboldt House in Buffalo now have their first Union Contract.
“It’s ‘taken a while, but we stuck with it and stayed united.’ Now we have a ‘real voice’ and things will be ‘better for ourselves and our families!,’” said Kiara Reed, who is employed as a Laundry Aide at Humboldt House.
The new contract includes fair wage increases, as well as a pension and educational opportunities. 1199 SEIU Members say the new agreement and new partnership developed with the incoming owners – who are committed to providing quality care – will go a long way in helping recruit and retain staff for those positions that are described by Union Leadership as critical for maintaining a safe and clean nursing facility.
“Now that both clinical and ancillary services departments at the Humboldt House are Unionized, we are ‘optimistic’ our partnership will ‘continue to improve’ the quality of care with the ‘ultimate goal’ of making Humboldt House a ‘premier choice’ for quality skilled nursing care,” Humboldt House management said in a statement.
Michael Harris, a Maintenance Tech employed at Humboldt House, said: “I’m ‘proud and happy’ we were able to come to an agreement with the new owners on a contract that ‘gives my co-workers and myself wage increases and a real voice on the job.’ Now we plan on continuing this work to help our residents,” said
In addition, back on October 6th the Workers employed at Elderwood Nursing Home on nearby Grand Island voted overwhelmingly to join 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and become Union Members. To read more click on the following link
