Preschool of America, a for-profit daycare company has declared war on workers at their schools.    Teacher’s Assistants at a branch of the Preschool of America located at 101 West End Avenue voted to join a union 10 to 3, on August 2, 2010. The election was certified by the National Labor Relations Board.  Following the vote, 8 workers at this school owned by Preschool were terminated.

The action by Preschool of America angered many parents, upset children and affected quality education at the center.  Parents were so enraged that 56 signed a petition calling on management to “cease and desist reprimanding, harassing and terminating” employees who seek union representation. Federal labor law prohibits firing, harassing or threatening workers who vote for or are engaged in union activities.

While taxpayer funded Hudson River Park claimed it cannot afford one dollar an hour for its employees’ health or retirement plans it continued to engage a $300 plus per hour “union avoidance” law firm even after the New York State Public Employee Relations Board Director dismissed its challenge to the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 30. More than six months after the 16 maintenance employees first met the criteria to legally establish Local 30 as their collective bargaining representative, the Park still refuses to negotiate a first contract.  Hudson River Park Trust President Connie Fishman’s anti-union crusade has all the makings of a vintage union-busting classic.

AFL-CIO Calls for the Reduction of Compensation Board Hearings

By Neal Tepel
August 4, 2010

The AFL-CIO is seeking to negotiate a compromise with the Workers Compensation Board that decreases the number of unnecessary hearings while complying with the current Workers Compensation Law. In response to the AFL-CIO call for the reduction of formal hearings at the Workers Compensation Board, John Sciortino, President of the New York Injured Workers Bar Association stated that We agree with the AFL-CIO that neither the Managed Adjudication Path (MAP) nor the new Streamlined Conciliation Process are fair to injured workers. An injured worker should have an absolute right to a formal hearing upon request. However, we believe there is room to reduce many of the silly issues contributing to unnecessary hearings and look forward to working with the AFL-CIO to identify all such issues.
