NALC and Campbell's Join Forces May 11th to Stamp Out Hunger

All across the country on May 11, 2013, Campbell Soup Company will join forces with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) to help Stamp Out Hunger.
Now in its 21st year,The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, held on the second Saturday in May, has become the nation's largest single-day food drive. Americans donated 70 million pounds of food in 2012, which marked the ninth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected by letter carriers.

UFCW Local 348-S Americare Workers Ratify New Contract

Thousands of Americare workers from UFCW Local 348-S in New York City ratified a new contract in an overwhelming city-wide vote on Saturday. The new contract includes a new system that ensures worker seniority when it assigns cases. Members also have improved bereavement leave and secured leave for union stewards. Americare home health aides take care of and assist elderly and disabled patients in their homes.

I have yet to see a perfect piece of legislation, and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), often referred to as Obamacare, has real flaws. But even at this early stage, its accomplishments are important. Millions of previously uninsured people have gained healthcare coverage; the law has begun to rein in healthcare costs; consumers are starting to realize savings; patients have greater access to preventive care; and carrots and sticks throughout the healthcare industry are spurring moves to improve quality.

Right Wing Republicans Shutting Down NLRB’s Power to Protect Workers

This past week the Obama Administration petitioned the Supreme Court to hear its appeal from the decision of the U.S. District of Columbia Circuit Court in Noel Canning v. N.L.R.B. The D.C. Circuit Court’s decision shuts down the National Labor Relations Board by eliminating the U.S. Constitution’s grant of Presidential power to appoint senior federal officials when the Senate is not in session. The Supreme Court is expected to hear the case, which will likely be decided sometime in 2014.
